Other than that, it's a bit too sentimental for my liking. Well, that won't work for my mom. I am a new mother and I was going to give this to my mother as a gift. When I got it I read it and it talks about how the baby kicked in mommies tummy just like daddy kicked in grandma's tummy when he was a baby.
This book would make a wonderful gift for new grandmothers fitting into that situation. There should be more books such as this one that cover various means in which a woman becomes a grandmother because I was quite disappointed to have to give this away after buying because it no longer fit our circumstances when our daughter came home from China. The illustrations are beautiful and delightful to the eye. Over all, I *loved* the book and wished I could have gifted it to my mother-in-law. I would love to see a book as beautifully written as illustrated as this book for adoption situation as well. The story flows as you anticipate each page turn. However, this book is about a PATERNAL GRANMOTHER who's son and daughter-in-law give birth to a BABY GIRL.
Most new grandparents I know do NOT look that old. It is clearly written from the point of view of the new father's parents, thus making it inappropriate to give to the parents of the daughter who had the baby. A sweet idea for a book, however, it definitely has limitations. Also, I did not realize that the book was written for only the SON'S/FATHER's parents. There is no way to know that nuance from the title and could cause some embarrasment if unknowingly given to the parents of the daughter. I'd hoped to buy a few to send to my friends who are becoming new grandparents. I was disappointed, though, when I saw that the grandparents depicted in the book are pictured as gray-haired and quite elderly.
He knows it is my special book about him and almost always asks me to read it to him at bedtime when he is with us. I do wish there was another version of it for those who have a daughter and son-in-law having a baby. I purchased this book for a good friend who is becoming a first time grandma very soon. He loves hearing about himself before he was even here. The current version is for a family with a son and daughter-in-law having a baby. I received my own copy when I was becoming a first time grandma about 4 years ago. As it turns out, my grandson LOVES this book.
It captures the love and wonder of that first-born grandchild. This book makes a wonderful gift for a new first-time Grandma or Grandma-to-be.
